The Picture in Every Thai Home

Video Sculpture

Abstract: The Thai royal family has a very significant role in Thai society and there is a famous song called “รูปที่มีทุกบ้าน” which can translate to “The picture in every house” refers to the picture of King Rama IX - whom you will be able to find his portrait everywhere in Thailand. Though another photo that is also equally significantly related to the monarchy and has usually been put on display on every family wall next to the King’s portrait is a graduation photo.

Thai graduation photo has a very specific setting and every photo looks almost identical. The photo shows the side of the graduate at the very second that he/she is reaching up to receive the degree certificate from one of the royal family members who is sitting on the podium. The normal custom way of receiving a graduated degree with the royal family members is to blow before walking toward the prince/princess, then you need to do the flipping hand gestures before reaching to get your degree, then walk three steps backward slightly to your right, blown again, and then you walk out. This ceremony must be done strictly fast therefore the graduate students must practice this custom many times before the exact event - which somehow makes them turn into some kind of weird ritual robots in the presence of the royal family members.

Classzoom

Classzoom is an interactive installation inspired by the idea of school and student life during the pandemic. Augmented shadow of an empty chair - as a symbol for each student, were created in Unity3D and controlled by the position of the user.

Abstract : During the Covid-19 pandemic, many international students have to push themselves to get up at 5am or stay up late until 2-3 am to join the virtual class via zoom from many different timezone. To convey different timezone and sunrise/sunset time of each student, the shadow in this project is used with ticking clock sound to mimic the eerie and exhausted mood of the virtual classroom.

When user get closer to the curtain position, the shadow will start to follow the user

Full Stop [ . ]

Full Stop is an open installation that invites the public to write the memories that they wanted to forget or let go in the providing space.

Abstract : Buddhism is the most common religious in Thailand with approximately more than 95% of the population following this religion. Thai Buddhism population is largely of the Theravada traditional, which tend to be very conservative and strictly followed doctrine and monastic discipline.

Using fluxus’s anti- aesthetic, same as street orders and instructions, with a twist of Buddhist traditional ways of merit making, the artist invites the public to write their stories, conversations, memories or even news that they wanted to forget or let go in the providing space. In this strange facsimile street temple, Suphitcha addressed the problem of finding inner peace in this mad age of over-information between the landscape of reality and fiction.
