Intangible week1 : Redesigning Bathroom Interaction#1
I was assigned to work with Dan for the first assignment to observe the restroom in 370, Jay Street.
We choose to work with the all gender restroom and selected 2 pieces to work with - which is the water faucet and the paper dispenser since this two objects are always related to each others.
We do the analyzing part together but I will blog about the faucet and Dan will blog about the paper dispenser.
Water faucet
Water faucet in all gender restroom is using a sensor to control the water but we have no idea what sensor has been used there - we guess it might be a distance sensor rather than movement sensor. The faucet was installed in the middle and about 2 inch off the sink’s edge.
Here is the faucet framwork :
Faucet Interaction
The faucet flood the water automatically in both two and one-handed action.
The sensor is visible to the user but do not give any lighting feedback
The sensor range is very wide and not sure how short or long it is which sometimes created a confusion Interaction
the faucet might operate by batteries
Here is the link to the facet installation information that I found

Confusing Interaction / problems
the arch of the faucet neck is pretty low and might be confusing with the sink’s flooding holes cover which is also black
the sensor sometimes runs water without hands in front of it
the sensors sometimes didn’t run water with hands in front of it
the sensor attached to the faucet in the position that sometimes user’s hands spill water out of the sink and make a lot of water mess
Opportunity for Improvement
Be very clear about what is the range of the sensor in the each product is - so when all the products will be installed, the range of each sensor in each product will not overlap to each other and create an awkward experience.
What sensor is actually suit the faucet better? - movement / range
Design the instruction about the installation range between the faucet and the sink
Design the faucet’s looks together with the sensor attached
